SustyVibes Kwara Movie Screening and Post COP27 Panel Session

On the 11th of December 2022, we screened the Netflix film “Don’t Look Up” and also held a productive post-COP27 conversation with global thought leaders and change-makers who were in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt for the conference.

Prior to the start of the event, Balqees Hamzat and Kehinde Akinsola had an InterVibes session. We use InterVibes to conduct interviews with individuals from diverse communities in order to raise awareness of and promote the sustynorm which simply means normalizing sustainable living.

Members of various organizations, such as Connected Development (CODE), Kwara NGO, Global Green Initiative, Ilorin Global Shapers, Meadows Community and Development Outreach (MCDO), Center for Community Empowerment and Poverty Eradication (CCEPE), and individuals such as Mr Abdulrahman Olumo representative of the Honourable Commissioner of Environment, Mrs Remilekun Banigbe attended the event. A total number of 89 guests were present.

The movie Don’t Look Up mocks up the reaction of the media, the scientists, the government and the citizenry towards the threat of a looming disaster of a comet which in real life relates to climate change and that’s why it made a perfect choice.

The movie was followed keenly and enjoyed by all attendees who agreed that it is a true reflection of our present situation as climate activists.

It was a delight to have our panellists, including Oloruntoyosi Thomas, Dare Akogun, and Azeez Abubakar, for a panel session after the movie screening. Dare Akogun is a climate justice advocate journalist with Sobi FM, Oloruntoyosi Thomas is the Executive Governor of Kwara State’s Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Non-Governmental Affairs and Azeez Abubakar, a sustainability project manager and consultant also sent in a video.

Following their presentation, the panellists took the audience’s questions and ultimately concluded that we should all be mindful of our environment, take responsibility, and become climate change champions, no matter how small, because it is that small effort in our various spaces that will make the impact we all need.
