Attention! Put down the straw

Over 5 million straws are used every day in the U.S. alone. Most of these plastic straws end up in the ocean, polluting the water and harming sea life. In the last three years, straws have climbed up to the top 5  items found in the sea. It is ridiculous that an unnecessary, virtually insignificant item such as a straw is one of the biggest environmental hazards. We need to find ways to reduce the amount of solid waste and plastic that ends up in the sea. Being conscious of our plastic straw use is one way of doing it.

Here’s what we need to do

The best option is to stop using them. Let’s be real, a straw is a luxury item. If we go to restaurants and refuse straws with our drinks or don’t take any from the straw dispenser, the devil won’t roll over. Check out the #stopsucking challenge on  strawlessocean.org

If you must use a straw, the guys at strawlessocean.org have also compiled a list of alternatives to single-use plastic straws. You can take your own straw with you to restaurants, eh?
