Many Nigerians assume that creating a focus on waste management will be a major distraction to economic growth and development needed at this critical point of development. To some others, the production of waste en-mass is an inevitable price of development. Some are yet to see the value of waste and why it is important to invest in using it as tool for solving other social issues tied to economic growth and development.
These among many other reasons have informed the need for us at WeAreM.A.D Initiative, to focus on how we can through waste to wealth and art interventions solve other social issues. Some of the issues we have identified now are health matters especially among children, community development, education and livelihood. Hence we are creating a model of using our interventions to solve problems in the health sector, to reduce poverty, to give children the opportunity to go to school, to keep the environment clean, to fight teenage pregnancy, as well as reduce unemployment.
The “Reuse Conference” is one of the outstanding measures the organization is using to reach out to young people between the ages of 12 – 30. With the understanding that if we want to shape the future we need to engage the future in the process. Hence, the “Reuse Conference” aims at reorienting the upcoming generation about the importance of waste and the need to maintain a clean environment. We are employing the use of an inter-school waste to wealth and art competition to stir up innovations, creativity and care for the environment.
On November 4th, 2016, the first edition of the conference tagged “More than just waste” will be launched in Akure , Ondo state. The conference will feature waste to waste and art inter-school pitch competition, seasoned talks from young people who have done amazing things with waste, and also an awards celebration.
