This dialogue was live

on October 26, 2023

Introduction

The National Open Dialogue on Nigeria’s Energy Transition was an inclusive hybrid dialogue led by young people and designed to create a platform for Nigerian youths and vulnerable communities to come together to make their voices heard and contribute their unique insights, aspirations, and innovative ideas to the nation’s energy transition plan.

The dialogue focused on creating awareness, gathering ideas and opinions, and developing recommendations and actions that amplify young people’s and marginalized groups’ voices in shaping Nigeria’s energy future.

About the Nigerian energy transition plan

The foundation for the Nigerian Energy Transition Plan was laid at COP 26, where Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari made a pledge, committing Nigeria to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. This was a significant move for Nigeria, a big player in fossil fuels, joining the ranks of other countries like Russia, Saudi Arabia, and China in committing to net zero. Shortly after, on August 24, 2022, the Nigerian government officially launched its energy transition plan. It outlines Nigeria’s roadmap to carbon neutrality, with a focus on six key areas: Energy, Power, Transport, Oil and Gas, Industry, and Cooking & Building. This plan is full of promise and has the potential to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty, boost the economy, and bring modern energy services to everyone. It is also expected to lead to significant net job creation with up to 340,000 jobs created by 2030 and 840,000 jobs by 2060.
