The Commonwealth Secretariat, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Youth Council, the Commonwealth Youth Gender and Equality Network and Rotary in Canada and the Caribbean, has launched a new initiative to empower young women.
The project was conceptualized at the Commonwealth Women Leaders’ Summit in 2016, and endorsed by Commonwealth Ministers responsible for women’s affairs at their meeting in Samoa later the same year. It is designed to ensure that women residing in the Commonwealth draw from the wealth of people within the association who are willing to commit their time and experience to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
It will focus on helping women acquire critical life skills and to progress in their chosen career paths by matching them with experienced professionals in their fields.
The Commonwealth Women’s Mentorship Scheme will begin with a six-month pilot in the Caribbean and the Americas. However it will include a small number of mentees from Africa, Europe, Australia and the Pacific.
Criteria
- It is open to Commonwealth citizens.
- Must be within the age bracket 18 to 29
- Demonstrated leadership and drive in their careers or in community projects.
The closing date for the application is May 17th, 2017.
