Susty Schools for Quarter1 2023

Every child dreams of growing up and with the impact of climate change, it is crucial that we take steps to safeguard the future of our environment and ultimately our children. Susty schools focus on sharing knowledge about climate change, planting the seeds for the next generation of changemakers, and empowering kids to positively impact their environment.

We have recently wrapped up our Susty Schools project for the first quarter, and it was an amazing experience! From January to March 2023, our team visited three schools across Lagos and Ibadan: Jumokol College, Unity Junior Secondary School Agege, and Success Ladder Secondary School Meiran.

Jumokol College, Ibadan

On February 10, we visited Jumokol College,  for the second time to continue our discussion on Climate Education with the students. We kicked off with a quick recap of the previous lesson on the SDGs, and these students were superstars! They remembered almost everything we taught them. We talked about the causes and effects of climate change, and the students even got to draw some illustrations.

We also took the senior students through the various programs and initiatives SustyVibes had carried out in the past and present to combat climate change. Meanwhile, we engaged the junior students in an introduction to the SDGs, with a focus on climate change and climate action. In total, 185 students attended, and it was a blast!

Success Ladder Secondary School Meiran, Lagos

Next, we visited Success Ladder Secondary School Meiran, Lagos, on March 16. We spoke to a smaller group of 24 students, but their enthusiasm was just as high! We introduced ourselves and SustyVibes, and they shared their observations of social problems in their environment.

We then gave them a brief history of the SDGs, and they were super interested. They even shared their understanding of climate words like pollution, and we were blown away! They made pledges to ensure environmental sustainability and support climate action, such as switching off electrical appliances when not in use and avoid wasting water. The students wrote a lot from the session, especially about each of the SDGs and what they represent.

Unity Junior Secondary School Agege, Lagos

Last but not least, we headed to Unity Junior Secondary School Agege, Lagos, on March 17. We had the support of the coordinator for extracurricular activities at the school, Mr Samuel Akinnubi who helped coordinate the students for the session. We introduced ourselves and SustyVibes to the 120 students and asked them about social problems they observe in their environment. They had some fantastic responses and even suggested possible solutions!

Students listening, while the team talked about the SDGs

Since they had already been introduced to the SDGs in school, we went a bit deeper and asked them about the ones they weren’t familiar with. The students were engaged and even made a pledge to take actions for environmental sustainability. We’re so proud of them!
