According to this post, some Nigerians have been importing genetically modified (GM) maize without permission from the authorities.
According to the ‘National Biosafety Management Agency’ (NBMA) CEO, Dr. Rufus Ebegba, the agency got an intelligence report stating that GM Maize has been imported with no record of the necessary dealings for approval.
The good Dr urged the general public not to panic, as the safety of the people and the environment are of great importance. He said, in his statement, that the agency would never compromise on NBMA 2015 Act which has outlined steps and procedures for the importation, production, and processing of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in the country, and they will ensure this process is strictly followed. He stated that the Agency is required by law to carry out a risk assessment on imported products before they are allowed into the country to ensure they are safe.
