The theme for this year’s Commonwealth Day is “Forging a sustainable and peaceful common future”. To commemorate this, we joined the British Deputy High Commissioner in Nigeria, Ben Llewellyn-Jones, and the Lekki Urban Forestry and Animal Shelter Initiative (LUFASI) Park, Lagos State to take climate action for the future on the 16th of March 2023.
The event started with the registration of participants and an inspiring welcoming speech from the British Deputy High Commissioner in Nigeria, Ben Llewellyn-Jones, and the Chairman of LUFASI Park, Elder Desmond Majekodunmi.
Followed by their speeches were exciting activities ranging from interactive high school students’ debate sessions on: “Collaboration or Competition is a significant approach to building a peaceful and sustainable future”.
Another impactful activity the invited high school students engaged in was the upcycling of plastic materials which was led by the F.A.B.E. International Foundation. We participated in the tree-planting session and animal rescue activity.
There was also an amazing spoken word poetry session that left us all giving the poet resounding claps.
In the end, seeing the students’ excitement and expression of how empowered they feel and how they are encouraged to take the lessons to their schools and communities in educating others about the need to protect our beloved environment was indeed one of the major highlights for us and a step close to building the sustainable future we all desire.
The change starts with you and me.
