Susty on the Streets
Lagos – Dopemu Market
Before our intervention, Dopemu Market was a bustling hub plagued by unmanaged waste. Clogged drains and heaps of trash were common sights, creating an unhygienic environment that hindered the market’s vibrancy. Our team, alongside market leaders, tackled the waste head-on. We unclogged drains, distributed trash bags, and engaged traders in discussions about proper waste sorting and disposal. The market began to transform, with cleaner pathways and a heightened awareness of waste management among vendors and shoppers alike.
Ibadan – Iwo Road
Iwo Road Park in Ibadan was notorious for its litter-strewn streets and neglected public spaces. Despite the unpredictable weather, our dedicated team gathered at the park, determined to make a difference. Amidst the noise of traffic and bustling stalls, we educated drivers and traders on recycling and the value of converting waste into reusable resources. Our efforts were undeterred by the rain, and the community’s enthusiasm grew, proving that environmental consciousness could thrive even in challenging conditions.
Kwara – Malete and Ilorin
In Kwara, both Malete and Ilorin struggled with significant waste management issues. Piles of garbage were common, and the concept of recycling was unfamiliar to many. Our team conducted interactive sessions, sharing practical tips on reducing, reusing, and recycling. The local residents, inspired by our message, actively participated in the clean-up efforts.
Imo – Love Garden, Imo State University
Love Garden at Imo State University had become a neglected space, overrun by litter and lacking proper waste disposal systems. Our arrival marked a turning point, as we joined forces with students to rejuvenate the garden. We cleaned the area and conducted educational sessions on proper waste disposal and its environmental benefits. The students’ energy sparked a revolution on campus, with many committing to ongoing efforts to keep their environment clean.
Kaduna – Tudun Wada
Poly Road in Tudun Wada, Kaduna, was marred by litter and neglected roadside areas. Welcomed by a community eager for change, over 60 volunteers joined us in a massive clean-up operation. We covered 1.4 kilometres, collecting vast amounts of litter and engaging local businesses in our mission. The community’s response was overwhelmingly positive, with businesses pledging to continue the clean-up efforts regularly, ensuring the area’s long-term cleanliness.
Port Harcourt – Rumuokoro Market
Rumuokoro Market in Port Harcourt was bustling with activity but struggled with significant waste management issues. Amidst the busy commerce, we educated traders on the impacts of climate change and the importance of recycling. The traders were receptive, recognizing the potential of small actions in reducing plastic pollution. The movement gained momentum as even passersby joined in.
Enugu – Obiagu Junction
Obiagu Junction in Enugu faced challenges with unmanaged waste and clogged gutters, contributing to an unsightly and unhealthy environment. Partnering with local officials, we undertook a comprehensive clean-up of the area. We cleared the gutters and provided practical waste management tips to the community. The Technical Advisor joined us to the State Governor on Waste Management, who provided material and mental support towards the success of the cleanup
Abuja – Upcycling Webinar
In Abuja, the focus shifted to innovation and entrepreneurship with a webinar on upcycling. Before this initiative, the concept of turning waste into valuable products was relatively unknown. During the webinar, successful entrepreneurs shared their stories of transforming trash, inspiring attendees to explore eco-friendly business opportunities. We were also inspired by their success stories and concluded the session with a call for participants to make positive changes in their immediate surroundings through upcycling.
