At the crux of sustainability is the need for context-based knowledge sharing and practice to bring to reality the hopes of a more sustainable society. And since our inception, we have been at the helm of sustainability driving action while spreading knowledge at the same time.
Over the past 7 years, we’ve taken sustainability to schools, communities, and marketplaces, encountering both young and elderly people, and we’re not stopping there, this time around we have an opportunity to step it up a notch. With our new and exciting partnership with the German Missions in Nigeria for our Bioverse NG Project!
Our mission is simple yet powerful: to enhance the knowledge of young Nigerians about the vital role of biodiversity in combating climate change. Through this collaborative effort, we aim to foster dialogues on environmental governance, stewardship, and the importance of inclusion and participation.
Why is this project so important?
Well, our beautiful planet is currently facing the largest loss of biodiversity since the industrial age. Shockingly, one million plant and animal species are now at risk of extinction, with many more on the brink within decades, as highlighted by the United Nations Environment Programme. In addition, the climate crisis is already impacting millions of lives, and very uniquely those in vulnerable regions. The good news is that efforts to mitigate climate change also support biodiversity conservation. It’s time to change our attitudes and mindset towards protecting the environment, and knowledge and solutions amplification plays a key role.
Recently, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was adopted at the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15). This historic framework aims to address biodiversity loss, restore ecosystems, and protect indigenous rights. It sets a target to safeguard 30% of the planet and degraded ecosystems by 2030, and Nigeria is proudly one of the 188 governments that have adopted this framework. But translating these global efforts into local action requires a collective approach that prioritizes all life on Earth and ensures we fight climate change and protect our biodiversity at all costs. Hence, the Bioverse NG Project! Our project takes a dual approach, focusing on climate action and biodiversity protection, and as this project’s philosophy, we believe that we as human beings are part of nature and not apart from it.
So, what can you expect from the Bioverse NG Project?
Let’s dive into some of the exciting activities that lie ahead:
Our project would include virtual learning workshops that are going to provide young Nigerians with vast knowledge of the links between climate change and biodiversity in Nigeria. We’re also bringing in climate and biodiversity experts from reputable institutions to ensure participants receive insights from policy to practice. The project would also hold dialogues that would enable participants to engage with key stakeholders in the climate and biodiversity sector.
Our project would also offer internship placements to participants, providing them with practical experience in climate action and biodiversity projects and allowing them to contribute and learn from professionals in the field.
Finally, the project aims to culminate in a national conference, bringing together stakeholders involved in the project, along with government representatives, for a comprehensive dialogue on climate change and biodiversity in Nigeria. The conference will be spearheaded by young workshop participants, who will share their insights and perspectives, driving the narrative and shaping the future of environmental conservation.
We’re extremely excited about this partnership with the German Missions in Nigeria, and we’re confident that together we will champion sustainability throughout the country.
Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this exciting journey. Let’s protect our biodiversity, combat climate change, and create a greener future, one step at a time!
