Unite4EarthDay Campaign: Mobilizing for a Greener Planet

We took on the responsibility to tackle one of our generation’s greatest challenges: Plastic Pollution in 3 major cities in Nigeria in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja. The theme, “Planet vs. Plastics,” resonates deeply as we confront the staggering reality of over 350 million metric tons of plastic waste produced annually, with less than 10% being recycled. This waste threatens our ecosystems, endangers wildlife, and disrupts the delicate balance of our environment.

About the Unite4EarthDay Campaign

In response to the urgent call to action, we launched the Unite4EarthDay Campaign, generously supported by the UPS Foundation. Our target was to mobilize individuals and communities across Nigeria towards reducing plastic pollution and embracing sustainable practices. Through this collaborative effort, we empowered young people, UPS staff, and local communities to seek plastic alternatives and support for plastic reduction. We gathered over 250 volunteers and together we embarked on street cleaning programs, advocacy and empowerment with recycle bins and notable waste management practices in the three locations.

Social Media Campaign

Our online blitz was also a cornerstone of the Unite4EarthDay Campaign. Through interactive trivia, video contests, and engaging content, we raised awareness about plastic pollution and inspired thousands to adopt sustainable lifestyles. The campaign sparked over 2,250 interactions, demonstrating widespread engagement and commitment to change.

UPS Recycling Challenge

Internally, we also mobilized UPS Nigeria staff through the UPS Recycling Challenge. From Lagos to Port Harcourt and Abuja, over 30 UPS staff members embraced recycling plastic waste within their offices. This initiative not only promoted recycling but fostered a culture of sustainability among UPS staff.

Street Conference

We concluded the campaign with Street Conferences in Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Abuja on the 20th of April. Activities included spot clean-ups, community advocacy sessions, and the donation of recycling bins, leaving a lasting impact on local communities. In Lagos’ Odo-Eran Market, drainages cleared and minds were opened to the possibilities of recycling. SustyVibers in Port Harcourt focused on sensitizing the community around the waterline area to adopt healthy, sustainable waste management practices.  Abuja’s bustling Area 1 Shopping Complex was not left behind, as we engaged traders and passers-by in learning how recycling could safeguard their environment.

Moving forward:

As key findings emerged and recommendations surfaced, the call for action grew louder. These recommendations focused on reducing plastic production, improving waste collection and recycling infrastructure, and promoting sustainable alternatives. To make these changes happen, working with governmental agencies and global partners became not just goals but essential steps. This highlighted the need for a united global effort to tackle the plastic waste crisis.
