LAPO to empower 1000 rural women

The Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO), a non-governmental organisation said it has decided to empower at least 1000 rural women in Enugu State this year, to enable them become financially independent.

Managing Director of LAPO, Dr. Godwin Ehigiamusoe, who stated this during the activities marking the 2016 International Women’s day, said the quest for equality, inclusion in decision-making and participation by women could only be realised when they are economically empowered.

Ehigiamusoe, who was represented by the Area Inspector of Agbani, Mrs. Udo Nkeiru said the organisation has continued to build the capacity of women to resist and confront obnoxious socio-cultural and traditional practices militating against their progress.

He stated that an enlightened and economically empowered woman guarantees the future of the girl-child with her access to education or skill secured.

“Women were educated on health issues, causes and management of common diseases, leading to increased health consciousness and positive living amongst community members. Clients, majority of whom are women, were screened for Malaria, high blood pressure (BP), Hepatitis, Diabetes and other ailments. This intervention has improved early detection and management of common diseases”, he said.

He said women would be assisted in various skills of their choice to enable them to be self-employed.
