SustySchools Visits Salem Academy, Lugbe.

On Friday, 19th of October 2018, the Susty Schools team visited Salem Academy, Lugbe Abuja and taught the Students the Sustainable Development Goals.

The team comprising of Gabriel Ubochi, Kelechi Dike, Abigeal Adeyemi and Aniebiet Obot taught about 200 senior students of Salem Academy, Lugbe, Abuja about the Sustainable Development Goals.

The students were asked to tell us what the think he problem or issues of the world are? –  They  were urged  to think like the president of Nigeria, almost all hands shot up – They mentioned no electricity, poverty, climate change, no good roads, hunger, diseases and many more.

They were applauded for being conscious of what the problems of the world were, telling them that they were global leaders and that what they just did was done by the United Nations, it’s 193 members in collaboration with academians, civil society groups, individuals and students like themselves. They were told  about the historic meeting in 2015 that gave birth to the Sustainable Development Goals, which grew from the Millennium Development Goals. It was explained that this meeting identified the problems of the world just like they did and set out to create 17 ambitious goals, with 169 targets that will solve these issues on or before 2030, especially putting an end to poverty, inequality and combating climate change. They were told  the aim of the goals was to create a more sustainable world for all.

The team explained to them that Sustainable Development Goals means development that meets the needs of the present generation and gives the future generations that ability to meet theirs too. For example, since we fell trees to produce wood and books, sustainable development will mean we should plant at least four trees for every one tree felld.

We then, listed and summarize what each goal entails. Stating everyone of us has a part to play in achieving these goals.

The session ended by asking the students if they had questions? One asked how we could achieve the goals, the team explained  that by doing our bits like getting to know about the Global Goals like we just did. Secondly, they could tell our friends (people) and write about it. Thirdly, they should make more conscious efforts in helping keep our environments clean.

The school management wants to create a Sustainable Development Goals club and SustyVibes will be working with them to achieve this.
