SustyVibes holds Don’t look up movie screening at Centre for Memories Enugu State

Care for the planet is everybody’s business, and as part of SustyVibes focus to create that sense of connection and responsibility to the environment, we host several events, projects and learning opportunities for people to not just see their environment as something that benefits them but also as something that can be cared for.

To increase awareness of environmental change and how the impacts human actions and way of thinking can play a significant role, we screened the Netflix movie “Don’t Look Up” and also had a post-COP27 discussion with Daniel Onyedikachi Ugwu and Ogechi Nwonye Bernard as our panellists.

Although the movie explained the helpless nature of human beings in the face of impending doom, which was the comet, there are definitely relatable plots that we can compare to our current struggle with our changing world.

The movie screening started around 3:30 pm and ended around 5:00 pm. After that, we entertained feedback and reactions from the movie, one of the guests said “Emotionally, the film was thrilling. Being accustomed to the powerful dialogue and special effects was found interesting. The ideas and information the film passed were intriguing as touching climate action’’.

At the same time, another person expressed that “My best part in the movie was that despite the chaos, the aspect of faith was considered thus in difficult moments, you can always fall back on your faith in God”.

We also interviewed about 10 people and got some of their thoughts on the environment. One of the questions that were asked inquired into their vulnerability and susceptibility to these environmental changes, we asked them to rate on a scale of 0-10 how much they think their lives would be impacted by the environmental change and the majority of the responses were above 7, signifying that the environment in one way or the other would influence they daily lives.

In one of the panellist’s reviews, Ogechi Nwonye Bernard, said, “The Nonchalant attitude of the individuals to sustainability can be resolved by government implementing policies towards this regard”. However, one of the participants suggested that “Response to Eco-anxiety should be channelling efforts to the mass planting trees, increasing awareness”, also, projecting issues on the urgency of the climate crisis on social media should be considered” he added.

One of the questions we asked that were with respect to their feelings about the environment and the movie that was just screened sought to see if they were making any conscious life-changing practices to better their immediate environment, and the responses were optimistic as quite a majority of them had plans to safeguard their immediate environment.

And this is what SustyVibes is all about, supporting and improving sustainability in our personal lives as well communally.
